Dear Friends,

I had a one-person show, entitled "Envelope", at the Round Top Center for the Arts, in Damariscotta, Maine, in 2003. I wanted to share with you some of the artwork which appeared in that show.

The show's theme, the mother-daughter relationship, was inspired by a poem I read by Maxine Kumin called "The Envelope". The poet turns the metaphor of the mother as "envelope" or container for the daughter around, and challenges us to understand the ways we carry our mothers in us. Losing my mother caused a shift in my art as I have worked through the grief in images, color, and words. She was also an artist and I "carry her forth" (to paraphrase the poem) not only in my face and sensibilities, but through the work of my hands.

In addition to the monotypes, collographs and mixed media pieces I made, I invited 21 other women to collaborate in the creation of a book of envelopes filled with words and images about their mothers.

A short video has been created which walks you through the show and explains some of the background for the themes and pieces. If you'd like to view it, please click here.
