For More Information: Tom's Of Maine Founders' National Tour Promotes Oral Health and Access(March 17, 2004 - KENNEBUNK, ME): Tom’s of Maine co-founders Tom and Kate Chappell recently traveled to Dientes Clinic in Santa Cruz, California, to mark the third leg of their nationwide tour promoting Tom’s Dental Health for All, a five-year program addressing the critical issues of access to quality oral care and oral health literacy in America. In partnership with thousands of retail stores, public dental clinics, dental professionals, and consumers, Tom’s Dental Health for All program aims to improve oral healthespecially among childrenby supporting community-based dental facilities in underserved communities throughout the United States. The initiative also educates consumers about the critical link between oral health and overall health. Tom’s is supporting 33 public dental clinics across America with grants to purchase dental chairs, X-ray machines, and other equipment, as well as critical supplies like toothbrushes and toothpaste. Tom’s of Maine recently awarded Dientes a $35,000 grant, used to help fund an expansion that more than doubles the size of the clinic. Three new dental chairs will enable up to 3,000 additional patient visits per year, reducing Dientes’ two- to three-month waiting list for new patients. The Chappells’ recent visit to the clinic coincided with Dientes’ Give Kids a Smile Day, a day of free oral care services to address the epidemic of untreated oral disease among disadvantaged children in Santa Cruz County. Dozens of dental professional volunteers treated more than 50 children, providing cleanings, sealants, fillings, extractions, root canals, and crowns. Tom’s of Maine entertained the children with toothpaste-making demonstrations while they waited, and Tom and Kate Chappell chatted with the young patients and their families. Dientes’ Executive Director Mark Riley says, “Tom’s of Maine’s Dental Health for All program recognizes a huge problem in our country; tooth decay is recognized by the Surgeon General as the single most common chronic childhood disease, and in our area is one of the top five reasons for absenteeism in schools. Our relationship with Tom's is a valuable partnership that will help improve the dental health of children in our community.” Founded in Kennebunk, Maine, by Tom and Kate Chappell in 1970, Tom’s of Maine is a leading manufacturer of safe, effective Natural Care products, such as toothpaste, mouthwash, floss, and deodorant. Tom’s is the only natural fluoride toothpaste to carry the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance (on Peppermint Baking Soda, Gingermint Baking Soda, Spearmint, Wintermint, Cinnamint, Fennel, Silly Strawberry, and Outrageous Orange-Mango flavors). The company has a long history of supporting social and environmental causes. Tom’s products contain no artificial flavors, dyes or sweeteners, are biodegradable, are packaged in earth-friendly ways, and are tested for safety and efficacy without the use of animals.
