Is Gluten-Free the Way for Me?

Posted on Jan 19, 2012

Have you ever found a solution to a problem, only to realize that solution didn't make you happy?  A few weeks ago I was reading a magazine when the following line jumped out at me:  "Do you suffer from fatigue, stomach cramps, and aching joints?  Intolerance to wheat gluten might be to blame."  The reason why it jumped out at me was that my answer to that question was "yes, yes, and yes." ...read more.

DIY: Build Your Own Compost Bin

Posted on Jul 01, 2011

When I moved into my new house a couple years ago, I was thrilled with my huge yard and beautiful gardens. Unfortunately, my lack of a green thumb soon got the better of the property -  as did my compost. How we do it: Simply White

Posted on Jun 23, 2011

Our Simply White toothpaste started with a challenge. We knew that many of our consumers were interested in a whitening toothpaste, but were not surprised that most were not interested in using harsh chemicals to whiten their teeth! For example, some were concerned about possible tooth sensitivity that can occur when using whitening strips or other peroxide based products. Living as a Localvore

Posted on Jun 09, 2011

A few years ago I was given the book Plenty: Eating Locally on the 100-Mile Diet by By Alisa Smith, J. B. MacKinnon and was intrigued by the simplistic concept of the lifestyle. The philosophies of "less is more" and "everything in moderation" combined with our desire, as a family, to commit to "greening" up our lives, fit together so perfectly. We decided to commit a year of eating only food that was grown or raised in Maine, and suddenly, we found ourselves in the midst of the long Maine Winter, dreaming of green gardens, hot sun and our hands deep in the dirt. ...read more.

I live in Portland, Maine with my husband and our two rescue dogs, Ozzie and Knute. We feel like we rescued two of the best dogs ever and think they have a pretty good life with us. When we were searching for our last dog, it was immediately clear to us how much need there is for more people to not only adopt dogs, but also to foster dogs for a temporary period. For this blog post to make any sense, there are two important things you need to know about my childhood. First, I grew up in a rural area of Maine. And second, my parents believed the best cure for a bored child was either chores, or finding something to do outside. Needless to say I spent a lot of time, with my brother or on my own, wandering in the fields and woods that surrounded my home. ...read more.

So why licorice root extract?

Posted on Mar 31, 2011

I grew up in the Emmental, a rural area in Switzerland known for its cheese (or mostly because of the holes in there) and the number of cows per square meter. Having always had a keen interest in plants, I spent a lot of time hiking in the surrounding area, and later in the Alps, accompanied by my plant identification book. Not quite sure how to make a living out of this, I went to Pharmacy school and received my B.S. from the College Pharmacy at the University of Bern. I then went on to study medicinal plants from Guinea and Zimbabwe during my Ph.D. at the University of Lausanne. I joined the Tom’s team in 1999, where I currently hold the position of Director of Analytical Chemistry. This seems to be a pretty good way to make a living out of my interest in plants! ...read more.

Planning Early for Homegrown Goodness

The skating rink that was once the driveway to the greenhouses at Blackrock Farm has largely melted away, we’ve set the clocks forward and we are beginning to prepare for spring in earnest. Every time I walk into the office Kevin (our vegetable guy) and Helene (the owner) are discussing types of radishes, planning space usage of the fields, discussing crop rotations or hammering out any other of the myriad of things that need to be figured before the frost leaves the ground. While our experience grows with each passing season there are aspects of the vegetable garden that we must restart each year, just like any gardener starting a plot at home. ...read more.

What is Slow Fashion?

Posted on Mar 11, 2011

There has been a lot of recent buzz in the new millennium about slowing down, nostalgia for a simpler life; a reconnection with our families, communities and a return to local living economies. Lawyers are leaving their practices to start small scale farms; Mothers are choosing to stay home with their children, building online brands to sell their handmade products. Not to mention all of the bakers, cheese makers, artists and seamstresses starting small in-home businesses, studios and local markets. Growing out of this desire to slow down, we have seen the rise of many global movements towards Slow Food, Slow Money and Slow Fashion.  As the Slow Food movement has taught us to learn about where our food comes from, who farmed it, and under what conditions it has been grown and cultivated, the Slow Fashion movement is asking the same questions about our clothing creation and consumption. ...read more.
