My Volunteer Story: patrolling trails in Denver, CO

My name is Heather and my dog is named Homer. I live in Denver, Colorado with my husband, James, but am originally from the Kennebunk, Maine area. I went to Colorado State University and never moved back to Maine. There is something wonderful about an average of 300 days of sun per year here in Denver! My position at Tom's of Maine is Health & Specialty Field Sales Representative.

I am an avid horse enthusiast and my husband's passion is trail running. My horseback riding instructor initially asked me to help her with "Pony Patrol" field trips where she take kids out on horseback as volunteers and trail stewards. The program is through Jefferson County Open Space "Park Patroller" Volunteer Division. I signed up to volunteer last spring, and had to complete the orientation, first aid and CPR portions of the volunteer program, all before hitting the trails.

My commitment to the Open Space Park Patrol Program - Pony Patrol Division - was a 40 hour agreement. I have now completed my horse patroller hours and am still enjoying the trail patrols on foot with my husband, James, and our dog, Homer. 

I usually try to get out and volunteer about one full day per month. I really value being able to take volunteer time and plan on utilizing my full "benefit" or allotment given to us by Tom's of Maine. We get 12 days a year and to date I have used 7 full days or 56 hours. I would have to say the best day was "Junior Ranger Day" when I was stationed at an outdoor kids' obstacle course. 

The Tom's of Maine volunteer benefit is one of the best things about working for Tom's. I am able to give of myself and help out in my community.  I have been able to meet new friends and connect with others who are also "all about doing good"!
