Our New Look!

Posted on Jun 29, 2010

We have heard from some of you that our packaging doesn't make it very easy to decide which product is right for you or what the flavors or fragrances are in each. We take our consumer feedback to heart in terms of how we can do better. So, we've been working over the past several months to develop new package designs, get input from our community of Tom's users and start to make some changes! We are excited about our new look and hope that it better serves you and continues our commitment to be open about how we've done business since 1970. Over the coming months you'll see the new graphics hitting store shelves, starting with some new products like Wicked Fresh!™ Toothpaste and Mouthwash and followed by the rest of our items. We hope you like them as much as we do! Please let us know what you think — we love to hear from you!

As a loyal customer whose family has been buying Tom's of Maine products (deodorant, toothpaste) exclusively for almost two decades, I am sad to say that we will no longer be purchasing your products. We didn't mind so much that your toothpaste changed. But you lost us as customers when I recently developed itches, rashes and burning under my arms within a minute of applying you deodorant. What possessed you to change your ingredients? Or did you simply source them from a new place, such as China? I feel betrayed.

I was floored to find this blog of customers who feel as I do about the degradation of Tom's product's. The Propolis and Myrrh Fennel toothpaste definitely does not have the same great flavor anymore, plus it's 1/2 oz less!

I agree with many others. New packaging and formulas don't make it for me. The texture of the toothpaste is different. I think it may be more abrasive. The old aluminum tube was better too. We don't need more plastic. Bring back the old formulas or sell Tom's to a smaller company that will keep the things that made Tom's different from the rest of the toothpaste pack.

Don't like your new look or the changed taste of your baking soda toothpaste. I've used it for 15-20 years, but no more. Can't find it anyway. You should be ashamed - it's one thing to sell your business; it's another to work with the acquiring mega-corporation to provide them cover while they change everything you worked to create. You started out as a small family business but you sold out and were consumed and co-opted by The Man! What a shame! PS - you are so corporate that your comment site won't let me write the word "embaras(s)ed". How sickeningly corporate.

You've got bigger problems than the packaging! Unless you go back to your original toothpaste formulas and aluminum tubes-- I think you can say good-bye to a large % of your customers! I for one will be returning the latest tube of Tom's toothpaste that I purchased. I have used the Tom's Flouride-Free Spearmint with Propolis/Myrhh for 6 years, tonight, she rejected it and blamed me for giving her "poinsonous toothpaste"! Tom's-- you sold-out big time!!! Rob

Tom's of Maine

Hi all, this is Rob at Tom's. I'm really sorry to hear of the disappointment many of you currently feel about Tom's, and while I don't have space to address every comment below, I did want to try and respond to some of the repeat comments. Colgate Palmolive purchased a majority share of Tom's in 2006. Since that time, we've continued to operate as an independent business. We are still in Maine and still following the same policies for making our products. Regarding product changes, our mouthwash was reformulated to try and improve the formula, but this has clearly caused some dissatisfaction for some past users. Many of the products mentioned below haven't changed, however, so I'm not sure what is causing the issue. Regardless, Tom's still has a 100% satisfaction guarantee. If you ever buy one of our products and aren't happy with it, we would really appreciate your call. Not only can we then better track your complaint, we can also work to make it right. We can be reached between 8:30 and 5:00 ET, Mon - Fri, at 800 FOR TOMS (367 8667). We'd really like the opportunity to talk to you, and hope you'll take us up on this request! If not, I would still like to thank you for your past support, and wish you the very best.

I didn't even know Tom's had been bought out years ago UNTIL the "New Improved" packaging and the awful chemical taste of the Spearmint mouthwash I've been using for many years. I got on the web and discovered that Colgate Palmolive had bought the firm. Obviously some chemical engineers have gotten the original formula, and attempted to come up with something that they believe approximates the flavor and action for a fraction of the cost. THEY HAVE FAILED. Please bring back the original formulas! Until you do, I can no longer stomach your product. I've seen it on sale almost everywhere, so others must agree. Unless, of course, the original strategy was to buy them and destroy them. PS: Your profanity filter is broken

I was recently been craving a non-sweet toothpaste and instantly thought of one my favorites: Tom's Cinnamint. So, my partner just came home from the grocery today and unpacked all the goods, and I was so confused when I saw a plastic tube with no "Cinnamint" on the label, sweetners listed in the ingredients, with the "Tom's of Maine" logo on the front. The most dissapointing thing was the taste and consistancy. And, I just read the other posts and see you were partially bought out by Colgate?? Colgate has a history of ANIMAL TESTING. Wow. You guys sold out...big time.

I just bought a tube of my long-time standard toothpaste--Tom's Spearmint flavor. I thought the tube was different feeling, but when I brushed my teeth I could not believe it!!! The toothpaste IS NOT THE SAME AT ALL! It tastes sweet and the consistency is runny and soft. My teeth do not feel clean. I CANNOT BELIEVE that the excellent product I have relied on for 20+ years is not available. I am angry and disappointed. I really believe that the old Tom's formula has contributed to my excellent dental health, and for years I have recommended it to everyone. My advice? Either change the formula back and take out all those sweeteners and floride or shut down the brand entirely. As is, this product is nothing but cynical remake of a product with a faked up label to sell to new customers who will think they're getting something special. I think you can see from these comments that Tom's longtime customers KNOW THIS PRODUCT and probably should have been the ones hired to foster this brand into the new business model effectively and honestly. I will never buy this toothpaste again. I am now going to have to find a similar product somehow, somewhere--any suggestions, other dismayed customers??

I second the comments from other disappointed Tom's of Maine users. I have been a faithful consumer of Tom's of Maine dental care products for more than 20 years, and I can state unequivocally that the new packaging and ingredients are NOT an improvement. The toothpastes are much too sweet and their texture is too thin. The awful new plastic toothpaste tube has already been deservedly slammed by others here and elsewhere. Your new mouthwashes are cloying artificial concoctions that do not deserve the Tom's of Maine label no matter what silly new font you designed for them. How sad that there is nothing now to distinguish your formerly wonderful products from mainstream drugstore toothpastes and mouthwashes except fond memories of what they used to be. Thanks for effectively destroying a once great brand by this sort of cynical bottom-line hollowing-out and trading down.

Amazing ... Colgate changes everything people loved about Tom's and then they wonder what they think about the packaging? Seriously? The taste is completely different, it takes like every other toothpaste out there, there is no natural taste, there's no extract/real mint taste. It's horrible. The tube is different and I'm not sure it is recyclable (although I'm not sure, there's no symbol) which would make your sustainability statement more "greenwashing". It's really a shame, it's another good company with a great product destroyed in some image meeting and ingredient cost opinion.

And to add to my earlier comment, I had become a Tom's user ten years ago because I read it does not use sodium laurel sulfate, which causes canker sores in those prone to them (which I am), and of course, the new formulation has it. You have lost me as a customer. What's the point? Plastic tubes, less product, and the same nasty chemicals everyone else uses. May as well buy any other random big-name toothpaste. I will now have to research a new toothpaste to use, because Tom's of Maine will no longer have my business. Smart move, guys. Lie down with dogs, wake up with fleas.

Hello everyone, this is Ellen. I'm the toothpaste category leader at Tom's, and I've been an employee here for 4 years. First, I want to apologize for the fact that we hadn't responded to these posts. To be honest, this was an older post and we weren't aware of the conversation taking place here. Second, I'd like you all to know that if you ever have a problem with any Tom's of Maine product, the best thing you can do is to call us. We take your feedback very seriously, and when you call us it helps us to better track and understand the issues. We also have a product satisfaction guarantee, so when you call us there may be some things we can do to make it right. It's true that Colgate Palmolive purchase a majority share of Tom's of Maine in 2006, but we are continuing to operate as an independent business. Where we've made changes, the decision to do so was our own. I'm sad to think we've disappointed you with some of these, as we made them with the best intentions of improving your experience with Tom's. I also want to point out that while we've added some new toothpastes, many of our original formulas are still out there! We can help you find them if you are having troubles. I guess I am asking you not to give up on us, but rather to work with us to fix the things we can fix. My dad always told me that I can't make everyone happy. But we can try! Call our consumer advocacy department and talk to Patti, Cameron, or Bridget at 800 FOR TOMS (367 8667). They'll help you find what you are missing and maybe you can help us understand how to win you back. In the meantime, thank you for your open and honest feedback.

Boo Toms. The toothpaste is bad and the packaging worse. The tube itself has to be the worst on the market, and my teeth and gums hurt to brush, a problem I never had before. Nice work Colgate. You ruined a good brand in less than 3 years.

Part of the reason we all loved Tom's of Maine toothpaste was the aluminum tube. It was better for the environment. NOT ANY MORE! I just purchased a tube of Propolis & Myrrh after a back order and found out after getting home that it is now packaged in plastic! Why should Colgate care? they obviously only bought Tom's to destroy it's reputation. Change the formula's. Change the packaging. Well I am now looking for a new toothpaste. Unless they go back to the old packaging, they will lose many customers. It's all the buzz at the health food stores.

I bought a new tube of Tom's toothpaste last night while in a hurry at CVS. I was surprised at the price: 5.29, more than I've ever paid. When I got home I compared it with my previous tube and noticed the net weight had been reduced from 6.0 to 4.7. Also it tastes too sweet and has a flimsy texture, not creamy. In other words you're selling less of a worse product for more money. That is just stupid. Time to find another toothpaste. p.s. I didn't know about the change of ownership (Tom's bought by Colgate?) until coming here, but I guess that explains it. Trust a good old moneygrubbing American corporation to foul things up. We've come full circle.

Ok I recently sent an email to Tom's regarding the change in formula for the Peppermint/baking Soda. They said it was changed because they were having problems with particles in the formula, sounds ridiculous to me since I never encountered any problems like that. Also, the said because the formula would turn yellow, again, I never encountered any yellowing in the formula, maybe if you keep the bottle for 20 years you will have a problem like that. Just to show you that none of this makes any sense, check out the ingredients for their new mouthwash Juicy Mint, yes they are using Aloe in it. If they are having all these problems why are they using it in this new flavor? Now, thhe only thing missing is the witch hazel. BRING BACK THE OLD PEPPERMINT WITH BAKING SODA WITH ALOE AND WITCH HAZEL. Is that too hard to ask for customer who has been using it for 15 years?

I am extremely upset that Toms changed their formula. I use the peppermint baking soda with aloe vera and witch hazel. Its sad, but they can change it back if enough complain. Also why make an Orange color scheme for Spearmint & Peppermint? I can think of something better... How about Green & Blue Duh!!!!!

I am VERY disappointed in the change-of-formula for the Tom's cleansing mouthwash. The "new look" doesn't matter much to me one way or the other, but it appears you have quietly eliminated the aloe vera juice and witch hazel from the ingredients. Why?? These were the natural ingredients that attracted me (and many other customers, I presume) to the product in the first place. Seriously awful and embarrassing. I asked around to two other people who I know used to use the calendula deodorant - and they said they now have the same problem. I'm so disappointed. I have three useless deodorants (2 apricot, 1 calendula) and now have to shop around for a new brand. Based on what I'm reading people writing about the toothpaste, I don't think I'll use that anymore either. I used to LOVE the "cinnamint" ... sorry you sold out, Tom's!

Last month I tried the new sensitive and peppermint versions and they tasted unnatural and just like all the crappy mainstream toothpastes that I've tried so hard to avoid. The graphics are irrelevant. People who purchased Tom's of Maine products did so because of their ingredients. There used to be an excellent toothpaste that had the following ingredients: fluoride, calcium carbonate, glycerin, water, xylitol, sodium lauryl sulfate, carageenan, spearment & pepermint oil. It looks like all of the new brands have additional ingredients that add nothing and detract everything that I valued in the product. You will certainly loose me as a customer if you no longer offer a product with these, and no other, ingredients.

Seriously, though, I and others have been purchasing Tom's because we have allergies! By the way, your Whole CareĀ® Fluoride Toothpaste product web page still lists spearmint and peppermint oils as ingredients rather than "natural flavors". I thought your various uses of "natural flavor/s" at http://www.tomsofmaine.com/research/ingredients#N was interesting. I wonder why the formulation was changed. Is it cheaper to make or is it meant to appeal to more people?

I have used the Tom's peppermint without flouride for years. Of course with you now being owned by Colgate, you can drop the folksy photos and notes from the Chappells. I had trouble finding my toothpaste this past week. As I squeezed the last drop from my old tube this morning, I pulled out the new tube and decided to read the ingredients before opening the tube--the new packaging made me suspicious. Sure enough, gone was the peppermint oil--replaced by natural flavors, which aren't natural. I'm thinking of taking the unopened tube back to my grocer. I hate that these huge conglomerates have bought all the small organic companies. I think I will go back to buying the xylitol toothpaste my dentist recommends and can be found on the Internet

I first started using Tom's seven years ago. It was satisfying to find and support a company who seemed to operate with sincerity and integrity, and who sold a thoughtful, enjoyable product. The exclamation points in your new packaging do little to distract from the lesser product you are putting out. (The new flavors--no thanks! "Natural Flavors"--nothing transparent there). Wow. I'm seeing a lot of the same comments here. And my story is no different... I've been using Tom's of Maine for over 12 years. The unscented deodorant to be specific. In fact, it is the only deodorant I use - or I should say, used. Recently you changed your look. AND it seems the product as well. Not only is it completely inferior to what you had before (for over a decade, but hey, you can't stop progress!) but the shiny-new product, although labeled 'unscented', actually seems to have acquired a skunk-like odor! I didn't think that was even possible in a deodorant! What is going on over there?! I can only assume that the massive machine known as Colgate has decided to trim the margins, increase efficiency and stream-line the company... I am extremely disappointed and regret that I am now going to have to find another product altogether. In fact, I am so angry about this (who knew that one could become so attached to a deodorant?) that I think I will avoid all Colgate products in the future just for spite. You guys really messed up.

Once again, it seems profit margin over quality. Unfortunately my letter will do little to change this. I was so excited when I started using Tom's of Maine 4 years ago. I have a mild allergy to Wintergreen, and never knew if there was wintergreen in a toothpaste until I used it-because all of the labels simply said 'natural flavors' or worse 'artifical flavors'. You can imagine how thrilled I was when I found a toothpaste that listed all flavor ingredients on the label. No more itchy mouth and wasted tubes of toothpaste for me! Yesterday I purchased a new tube of whole care toothpaste with the new packaging. I was skeptical, because change doesn't usually bode well-I hate being right. The new packaging has .3 oz less toothpaste per tube and no longer is there only one flavor in my peppermint toothpaste. Now, I am relegated back to the all encompassing 'natural flavors' label which tells me nothing when the ingredients I am allergic to are natural. I am very disapointed with Tom's. There is no significant change in the layout or formating of the ingredient list which appeared to be the reason that the packaging was changed in the first place. Sure the font is the same, but I can't trust an umbrella ingredient that could be changed depending on the market price that day. No allergic reaction from this batch, but now I can't trust the label that says my toothpaste is peppermint, since peppermint is no where to be found on 'easy to read' label. Looks like I will start my search for an honest product all over again.
