What is it?Clay is a hydrous silicate of aluminum, magnesium, or calcium. Silicates are a class of minerals and make up approximately 30% of all minerals of the earth. Hectorite clay is high in magnesium, contains some lithium, and has a very small particle size.
What does it do?We use hectorite clay primarily as a thickener in Long-Lasting Deodorant Roll-On, but it can also suspend solids, stabilize emulsions, and modify the consistency and feel of cosmetic products.
What are the alternatives?Hectorite clay is not the only thickener available, but we believe it is a good choice for us due to its natural source, great swelling capacity and thickening capacity, light color, and low iron content, which reduces any staining potential of products in which it is used.
What are the risks?Hectorite clay is very safe to use in personal care products. It is defined as a non-hazardous substance and is non-irritating to the skin. The dry material that goes into our products is a fine powder, so the only potential low-risk hazard would be breathing in the dust—but since you will be using the end product and not the individual ingredient, this is highly unlikely. Tom's of Maine recognizes that no two people are alike, and even with pure and natural ingredients, some individuals may develop an allergic reaction that is unique to them. As with any product, be sure to discontinue use if you experience discomfort or other indications that the product may not be appropriate for your individual body chemistry.
