Titanium dioxide

What is it?

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is widely used as a white pigment in many products including toothpaste, cosmetics, sunscreens, paints, pharmaceuticals, and foods. Titanium is the ninth most abundant element in the earth’s crust. It is produced from ilmenite ore rendering a very pure end product which is inert and non-toxic.

What does it do?

Titanium dioxide is used to improve the aesthetic of toothpaste. In very small concentrations it renders a toothpaste white, which for many consumers makes it more pleasing to use.

What are the alternatives?

The alternative to using natural Titanium Dioxide is to use a synthetic dye. This does not fit the Tom’s of Maine stewardship model and so we have no intentions of ever using a synthetic dye.

What are the risks?

Titanium dioxide has no known toxicity or carcinogenicity. It has a long history of safe use in toothpaste products. Tom's of Maine recognizes that no two people are alike, and even with pure and natural ingredients, some individuals may develop an allergic reaction that is unique to them. As with any product, be sure to discontinue use if you experience discomfort or other indications that the product may not be appropriate for your individual body chemistry.
