The American Dental Association's Seal of Acceptance, first awarded in 1931, is a trusted symbol of a dental product's safety and effectiveness. In order to win the Seal, manufacturers must submit studies that demonstrate equivalent safety and effectiveness results to those of a clinically tested product; maintain manufacturing and laboratory facilities up to established safety and purity standards; and submit ingredient lists and product information for review and approval.
In 1995, our original formula with fluoride was deemed safe and effective by the American Dental Association (ADA), becoming the first natural toothpaste to bear the ADA's Seal of Acceptance. Since then, many more of our products have earned the Seal.
The following Tom's of Maine products have earned the ADA Seal of Acceptance:
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) created the cruelty-free certification to help consumers identify those companies that do not test on animals or use animal ingredients. Participating companies must complete a short questionnaire and sign a statement of assurance before being approved as cruelty-free.
The Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics' (CCIC) Leaping Bunny Program administers a cruelty-free standard and the internationally recognized Leaping Bunny Logo for companies producing cosmetic, personal care, and household products. The Leaping Bunny Program provides the best assurance that no new animal testing is used in any phase of product development by the company, its laboratories, or suppliers.
The CCIC promotes a single comprehensive standard and an internationally recognized Leaping Bunny Logo to help make shopping for animal-friendly products easier and more trustworthy.
Tom's of Maine products have carried the kosher certification since 1990. With the exception of bar soap, our products are manufactured under the supervision of the Kashruth Division of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations and are certified as kosher and pareve. Please note, however, that only our deodorants are kosher for Passover, and that some new products may not yet bear the OU Kosher symbol.
Halal is an Arabic word meaning lawful or permitted. Since 2006, all Tom’s of Maine products have carried the Halal endorsement, with the exception of our bar soap and our new Wicked Fresh! Mouthwash. The Halal endorsement certifies that they are made in accordance with Islamic guidelines under the supervision of the Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America (IFANCA).
