Chantal Bergeron Dr. Chantal Bergeron, Ph.D.
Botanical Research Scientist



Dr. Bergeron received her Bachelors Degree in Plant Sciences from University Laval in Canada. For her Masters Degree at the same university, she studied the optimal conditions for the production of actives in medicinals plants. After two internships (in Sint-Katelijne-Waver, Belgium, and Lausanne, Switzerland), Dr. Bergeron completed a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland. During this period, she investigated the constituents of North American as well as African medicinal plants with a focus on antibacterial and antifungal activities. She was awarded the best poster prize at the Meeting of the Society for Plant Polyphenols held in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1993. Dr. Bergeron's post-doctoral work at the University of Ottawa, Canada, focused on quality control of Echinacea products, and she held the post of Pharmacognosy lecturer at the University of Montreal, Canada.

As botanical research scientist at Tom's of Maine, Dr. Bergeron is in charge of research projects in oral and body care and coordinates collaboration with universities. She uses her expertise in phytochemistry, biology, and microbiology to identify suitable plant extracts for use in prevention and treatment of oral cavity disorders (caries, gingivitis, periodontitis, halitosis) as well as ingredients for body care and self care. She is particularly interested in the link between oral and systemic health.

Dr. Bergeron is author of several publications on the stability of active compounds, the isolation of active compounds in North American medicinal plants, and the development of analytical methods for quality control of selected herbals. She also serves as referee on several highly regarded scientific journals in the field of natural products chemistry, and is a member of the organizing committee for the 2007 American Society of Pharmacognosy's annual meeting, which will be held in Portland, Maine.
