After working in a pharmacy for a year with a bachelor's degree in pharmaceutical studies, Stefan Gafner realized that he was more interested in research on medicinal plants than in life behind the counter. He received his Ph.D from the University of Lausanne (Switzerland), which has a world-renowned laboratory on medicinal plants research. His studies focused on the chemistry of medicinal plants from Africa. Dr. Gafner continued to pursue his education at the University of Illinois-Chicago as a postdoctoral fellow in molecular biology. His studies included the screening of natural products and the identification of the mode of action of actives in the chemoprevention of cancer. As a researcher at Tom’s of Maine, Dr. Gafner heads the analytical chemistry department, where we develop methods for analyzing the components of our products. He is also an important member of the research group, where he uses his skills in analytical chemistry, spectroscopy, and chromatography to isolate and characterize the actives in promising botanicals. Since his arrival at Tom’s, he has published his findings in numerous scientific journals. Dr. Gafner's research interests include the identity, quality, and stability of herbal preparations as well as the mode of action of the botanicals. He is also on the organizing committee for the 2007 American Society of Pharmacognosy's annual meeting, which will be held in Portland, Maine. |
