Ingredient Fact Sheet: GlycyrrhizinWhat is it? Glycyrrhizin is a sweet-tasting compound purified from the root of the licorice plant. What does it do? The function of glycyrrhizin is to foam, forming small, condensed bubbles. These bubbles, or foam, help to disperse the ingredients of the toothpaste throughout the mouth when brushing. Tom’s of Maine has applied for a patent, which is pending, on this natural foaming process. What are the alternatives? Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), which is processed from coconuts, is the most common alternative, and one that Tom’s of Maine uses. We developed glycyrrhizin to replace SLS in some of our toothpastes because we’re always looking for new ways to formulate our product, and glycyrrhizin represents an innovative new choice for our consumers. What are the risks? Glycyrrhizin has no known carcinogenicity and is on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s list of ingredients that are Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS). Tom's of Maine recognizes that no two people are alike, and even with pure and natural ingredients, some individuals may develop an allergic reaction that is unique to them. As with any product, be sure to discontinue use if you experience discomfort or other indications that the product may not be appropriate for your individual body chemistry. |
