Ingredient Fact Sheet: Lemongrass Oil

What is it?

Lemongrass is a perennial grass native to tropical Asia. The specific species of lemongrass used in our products is Cymbopogon citratus, commonly known as West Indian Lemongrass, Madagascar Lemongrass or Guatemala Lemongrass.

A common ingredient in Thai and Indian cuisine, lemongrass is widely used in a variety of foods, beverages, candy, baked goods, and chewing gum. Aromatic lemongrass oil is also used as a fragrance component in many soaps and detergents.

Lemongrass has also played a role in historic Chinese folk medicine. It has traditionally been used for colds, headaches, stomachaches, and rheumatic pain.

What does it do?

Lemongrass is widely thought to have analgesic (pain relieving), antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties. It gives our gentle deodorants and our deodorant bar soaps their deodorizing benefits.

What are the risks?

Cymbopogon citratus has no known toxicity or carcinogenicity. It has a long history of safe us and is Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) by the US Food & Drug Administration.
