Ingredient Fact Sheet: Silica Shells

What is it?

Silica shells, derived from sand, are created by dissolving the sand into a liquid, then spraying it to form hollow droplets—the silica shells—when it solidifies. The eggshell-like droplets feel like talcum powder.

What does it do?

Silica shells absorb fragrance and reduce the rate of evaporation, causing the fragrance to be released slowly over time. We use this encapsulation method of fragrance release on our Long-Lasting Deodorant Sticks.

What are the alternatives?

You can encapsulate fragrance in synthetic polymers or starches. Starch is incompatible with a water-based formulation—it would dissolve.

What are the risks?

There are no risks. Inhalation would be dangerous but there is no possibility of this occurring when using our products.

Tom's of Maine recognizes that no two people are alike, and even with pure and natural ingredients, some individuals may develop an allergic reaction that is unique to them. As with any product, be sure to discontinue use if you experience discomfort or other indications that the product may not be appropriate for your individual body chemistry.
