Ingredient Fact Sheet: Sucrose Cocoate

What is it?

Sucrose cocoate is a natural soap derived from sugar beets and coconut oil. It is a cleansing agent and an emollient (an ingredient that helps to balance or maintain moisture levels).

What does it do?

Sucrose cocoate provides moisturizing and gentleness to our glycerin liquid soaps. We use it because it is especially mild and non-drying. It also enhances the foaming characteristics of our product.

What are the alternatives?

Animal-derived tallow, lanolin, and synthetic detergents and moisturizers are the alternatives. Tom's of Maine products do not contain any animal ingredients, and are tested for safety without the use of animals. Instead, our ingredients such as sucrose cocoate are sourced from natural, renewable plants and herbs.

What are the risks?

Sucrose cocoate has no known toxicity and has a long history of safe use in a variety of consumer personal care products.

Tom's of Maine recognizes that no two people are alike, and even with pure and natural ingredients, some individuals may develop an allergic reaction that is unique to them. As with any product, be sure to discontinue use if you experience discomfort or other indications that the product may not be appropriate for your individual body chemistry.
