Kennebunk, Maine – January 16, 2006
Tom’s of Maine, the nation’s leading maker of natural personal care products, announced today that its manufacturing and fulfillment facility has moved to invest in renewable wind energy for all its energy needs. The change will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1.5 million pounds per year, the equivalent of planting 214 acres of trees or removing 138 cars from the road.
“One of our central beliefs is that Tom’s of Maine can be financially successful while behaving in a socially responsible and environmentally sensitive manner,” said CEO & Cofounder Tom Chappell. “Our move to renewable wind energy is another exciting example of how doing what is good for nature and good for communities turns out to be good for the bottom line as well.”
COO Tom O’Brien and Director of Product Supply Mark Dobrovolny partnered with Constellation NewEnergy and Clean Air-Cool Planet to make this project an environmental and economic success.
"Partnering with Tom's of Maine made perfect sense for us given our respective commitments to social responsibility and environmental sensitivity," said Bruce McLeish, senior originator for Constellation NewEnergy. "We are pleased to be working with Tom's of Maine and support them in their efforts to promote a clean environment."
As of January 31, 2006, the energy procured for Tom’s of Maine 100,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Sanford, Maine, will be generated by the Ainsworth Wind Energy Facility in Nebraska. The 100% Wind Renewable Energy Certificate product is certified by the Green-e certification program administered by the Center for Resource Solutions. Tom’s is purchasing 130,000 kilowatt hours of energy per month or approximately 1,150 megawatts per year of renewable energy certificates from the wind farm. This purchase will avoid the emission of more than 1,587,000 lbs. of carbon dioxide pollution each year.
