Tom’s of Maine: Our Unwavering Commitment to Your Family's Safety and Peace of Mind

The safety of your family, especially your little ones, is paramount, and recent online discussions about lead in toothpaste have raised questions. At Tom's of Maine, your trust is our most valued ingredient. We hear you and we want to assure you that our toothpastes are safe.

For more than 50 years, Tom's of Maine has been passionately committed to making safe, effective products with naturally sourced and derived ingredients. This mission drives us daily to earn and keep your loyalty, which is why transparency about our rigorous quality and safety standards is so important to us.

We control for naturally occurring trace levels of heavy metals through our ingredient specifications and have processes in place to continuously monitor product quality and safety. Our finished products comply with all applicable FDA requirements for toothpaste.

This oversight allows us to state that any potential exposure from our toothpastes, when used as directed, would be less than in a single serving of many common foods, including certain fruits and vegetables.

Yes, our toothpaste products are safe for use. Every Tom's of Maine toothpaste meets rigorous FDA standards and our own high internal quality and safety benchmarks.

Many products with naturally sourced and derived ingredients, and many fruits and vegetables, may contain trace levels of lead. Lead is a naturally occurring element found in the environment, including in soil. As such, trace amounts may be found in products such as toothpaste. The FDA recognizes this and has set strict limits to ensure safety.

Like other toothpastes, Tom’s of Maine toothpastes may contain trace amounts of lead. Our toothpastes meet the FDA’s strict standards, in addition to our own ingredient specifications and quality controls that are in place to ensure the quality and safety of our products.

Our commitment to the safety of your family, particularly your children, is unwavering. We meticulously select and source naturally sourced and derived ingredients, evaluate all of our ingredients and formulas for safety and uphold stringent quality controls. We ensure any naturally occurring trace elements in our finished products are within FDA safety guidelines and our own high standards.

Tom’s of Maine has a comprehensive, ongoing safety monitoring program. This includes vigilant oversight of all ingredients, continuous review of scientific literature, adherence to regulatory updates, and careful monitoring of consumer feedback.

At-home lead test kits are typically designed for surfaces like paint and metal; not for toothpaste or other consumer products. Our products undergo expert review and evaluation to ensure they meet FDA standards and our robust internal quality and safety protocols.

No, you should not be concerned. When used as directed, any exposure is far below levels of concern – often less than what's found in a single serving of common foods.
