What is it?
Arginine bicarbonate is a salt of naturally derived arginine which has oral health benefits. Arginine is a naturally occurring amino acid in plants and can be derived via natural fermentation of plant materials that contain sugars such as sucrose. Arginine is dissolved in pure water and then treated with carbon dioxide gas to form an arginine bicarbonate solution, a more concentrated and convenient way to incorporate the required amount of arginine (8% by weight) into our toothpaste formulation.
What does it do?
Arginine bicarbonate, a naturally derived ingredient, is used in Tom’s Rapid Relief Sensitive toothpaste together with calcium carbonate to help seal open dentin tubules and thus reduce the pain of tooth sensitivity.
How is it made?
Is this the right option for me?
Arginine bicarbonate is deemed safe for use in foods by the US Food and Drug Administration. Arginine is naturally produced in our bodies and is present in the proteins of both plant and animal based foods we eat every day. Tom’s of Maine recognizes that no two people are alike, and even with pure and natural ingredients, some individuals may develop an allergic reaction that is unique to them. As with any product, be sure to discontinue use if you experience discomfort or other indications that the product may not be appropriate for your individual body chemistry.
In addition, sensitive toothpastes provide temporary pain relief. Sensitive teeth may indicate a serious problem that may need prompt care by a dentist. See your dentist if the problem persists or worsens. Do not use a sensitive toothpaste product longer than four weeks unless recommended by a dentist or physician.
