Myrrh resin or gum is a naturally-derived, sap-like substance harvested from the bark of the small, horny tree species Commiphora myrrha.

Our Stewardship Model guides us to select ingredients which have been processed in a manner that supports our philosophy of human and environmental health.

The myrrh oleo gum resin is ground, then extracted using alcohol, and filtered.  The result is a myrrh gum tincture, which is used in our products.

There are other herbals used in our botanical line, but there is no natural alternative to myrrh.

No serious toxicities have been reported with myrrh. Myrrh is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for food use and given “generally recognized as safe” status as a food additive1.

Tom’s of Maine recognizes that no two people are alike, and even with naturally derived ingredients, some individuals may develop an allergic reaction that is unique to them. As with any product, be sure to discontinue use if you experience discomfort or other indications that the product may not be appropriate for your individual body chemistry.
