Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil

What it is

Mentha piperita oil, also known as peppermint oil, is a plant-derived fatty acid oil extracted from peppermint leaves (Mentha piperita).

How it's made

Our Stewardship Model guides us to select ingredients which have been processed in a manner that supports our philosophy of human and environmental health.

Mentha piperita oil is derived from peppermint leaves through steam distillation and filtration.

What are the alternatives?

There are other herbals used in our botanical line, but there is no natural alternative to peppermint.  Synthetic flavors are available, but would not meet our Stewardship model.

Is this the right option for me?

Peppermint oil is commonly used in oral care products and is Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS)1 for both the US FDA and the Flavor and Extract Manufacturers Association (FEMA).

Tom’s of Maine recognizes that no two people are alike, and even with naturally derived ingredients, some individuals may develop an allergic reaction that is unique to them. As with any product, be sure to discontinue use if you experience discomfort or other indications that the product may not be appropriate for your individual body chemistry.
