Sodium Phosphate

What it is

Sodium phosphate is the sodium salt derived from phosphate rock in the earth.

How it's made

Our Stewardship Model guides us to select ingredients which have been processed in a manner that supports our philosophy of human and environmental health.

Sodium phosphate is derived from purified, finely ground phosphate rock that is reacted with sulfuric acid to yield phosphoric acid. The Phosphoric acid is then purified and reacted with Sodium Hydroxide to form Sodium Phosphate.

What are the alternatives?

For anticaries mouthwash products, with acidulated phosphate fluoride solution, sodium phosphate and phosphoric acid are required in conjunction with Sodium Fluoride per the Anticaries Drug Products for Over-the-Counter Human Use, Final Monograph. Tom’s offers both fluoride and fluoride free mouthwash options.

Is this the right option for me?

Sodium phosphate is Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) by the FDA to be used as a food substance for human consumption1.

Tom’s of Maine recognizes that no two people are alike, and even with naturally derived ingredients, some individuals may develop an allergic reaction that is unique to them. As with any product, be sure to discontinue use if you experience discomfort or other indications that the product may not be appropriate for your individual body chemistry.
