Three Quick Breakfast Smoothie Recipes to Fuel Your Family’s Busy Day
By Bethany Johnson in Healthy Feeling
Healthy breakfast smoothies are my family’s go-to morning meal. They’re quick, easy, and super nutritious, and kids can participate in the customization of each recipe. The best part, however, is that smoothies fill you up with a mix of nutrients that gets you through the morning without the sugar crash common in certain types of cereals, toasts, and bagels.
Here are three fulfilling breakfast smoothie recipes, utterly packed with natural, colorful nutrients you can try tomorrow morning.
Beta Brain Freeze
If your kids don’t eat all their veggies at dinnertime, don’t sweat it. This breakfast smoothie is the perfect way to get the health benefits of raw carrots without your family ever knowing the difference.
- 1 cup chopped frozen mango
- 1/4 cup ice
- 1/2 cup organic apple juice
- 1/4 cup shredded carrot
- 1 banana
To make, simply toss the ingredients into your blender and give it a whirl on the lowest setting. After about a minute, turn up the speed to “high” or “liquefy,” and let the mixture blend for another minute. You’ll notice the oil-free nature of these ingredients makes for a slushy, sherbet texture, so if your kids don’t like the sound of smoothie, call it Slush Mush, Slurper, or Mango Icy to brand it as a fun dessert they’ll want again and again. Whatever you name it, be sure to make it often!
To switch things up one morning, take the occasional detour away from fruit-based smoothies and offer up this chocolaty drink. It doesn’t include any refined sugar, but packs a protein punch with almonds, their monounsaturated fatty acids, and coconut milk.
To make, grab your ingredients:
- 1 Tbsp. cocoa powder
- 1 cup soaked raw almonds
- 2 Tbsp. almond butter
- 1/4 cup maple syrup or raw, local honey
- 2 cups unsweetened culinary coconut milk
Have your child measure and dump all these ingredients into your blender, and pulse for 90 seconds. Scrape down the sides and blend for another 30 seconds. Once it looks ready, serve right away.
Mean, Green Breakfast Smoothie
I remember the exact moment I discovered the brilliant benefits of avocado in breakfast smoothie recipes. I’d always known about avocado’s good fats and incredible superfruit status, but I had no idea you’d benefit from tossing them into a fruit smoothie.
As a busy mom, it’s disheartening to see your kids’ healthy breakfast smoothie start to separate just a few minutes after you serve it. The meat from an avocado is the solution. Why? Avocado meat keeps smoothies mixed without falling apart. This was an “ah-ha” moment for me. I’d recommend tossing a spoonful of avocado into any of these recipes, but I use it mostly in this original family recipe.
- 1/2 an avocado
- 2 cups plain organic yogurt
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1/4 cup frozen chopped organic spinach
- 1/2 cup maple syrup
- 2 large bananas
- 1 cup organic whole milk
Blend all your ingredients together, and pour into tumblers. Because this mixture is a hearty blend, serve with wide, sturdy straws. Its density is the perfect fuel for adults headed to work, as well as for kids who plan to spend the day playing, studying, or both.
Breakfast isn’t a chore—it’s an opportunity. You can save time and money while filling your family’s tummies with natural goodness that will deliver nutrients that pack an energizing punch. These breakfast smoothie recipes are so easy to make, there’s no reason to beg and plead with kids to eat more veggies. You can just include them in the most important meal of the day without even setting the table.
