Why did Tom’s of Maine change its deodorant and antiperspirant line?

While Tom’s of Maine underarm products are beloved by many longtime users, we’re always looking for ways to improve! We’re excited to launch these formulas in a modern, inclusive look, with containers made from 100% recycled plastic and some new fragrance offerings. Plus, we have a new deodorant formula to provide odor and wetness protection!
How does the new Tom’s deodorant differ from the current deodorant lines?

It’s our next generation deodorant line for a variety of reasons. Some of the differentiators include that the container is made with 100% recycled plastic and is a new bigger size (+15% more!) with a gender neutral design. The formula is also dermatologist tested and has wetness protection. We’re also excited about some of the new scents we’ve introduced with the launch – fragrances for everyone!

What ingredients are in the deodorant formula, and how do they work?

At Tom's of Maine, every ingredient we use meets our strict Stewardship standards for natural, safe, and effective. Our I.P.S. table [hyperlink to IPS table below] lists the ingredient, purpose, and source for each ingredient in the formula.

What does “dermatologist tested” mean?

Dermatologist tested means our products were clinically tested under the supervision of a US board-certified dermatologist for any potential skin irritation.
Does the full product line – both antiperspirants, and deodorants –have wetness and odor protection?

The deodorant provides odor and wetness protection, while the antiperspirant offers 48 hours of sweat and odor protection. Our antiperspirants contain recycled aluminum and create temporary “plugs” in the sweat ducts to provide extra effective 48 hour protection against sweat. The new deodorant does not block sweat pores, but is instead designed to absorb moisture from sweat, and includes water-loving, naturally sourced and derived ingredients like glycerin, propylene glycol, and butylene glycol.;
Do consumers need to do an “armpit detox,” or should they expect a transitional period when trying the new deodorant line? If so, how long does it take your body to get used to the new deodorant?

If you’re switching from an antiperspirant, your underarms may need time to adjust. It's essential to keep in mind that making a switch can come with some changes, and it may take some time to acclimate to a new product.
Does the new deodorant line have a white cast that can transfer to clothing?

The new deodorant formula is designed to go on clear.
The packaging says the container is made with 100% recycled plastic, but can I recycle the container after I am done with it? What is the company doing to contribute to recycling efforts?

Our barrel is made with recycled plastic material of polypropylene plastic (PP). You should check locally to see if your community accepts #5 PP because every community has different rules. If your community doesn't accept #5 plastic, contact them and ask them why not! Markets are expanding all of the time. o Additionally, as a member of The Recycling Partnership (TRP) polypropylene (PP) coalition, Tom's of Maine is supporting additional PP recycling each year by funding TRP projects across the United States.
