My Secret Natural Makeup Remover

By Angela Tague in Natural Products

A few years ago, I started on a journey to switch to natural products. I feel better knowing what's in my personal care products. I can trust that the brands I choose take care in sourcing naturally derived ingredients.

During my search for a natural facial moisturizer, I stumbled upon a fabulous way to remove my makeup. I was experimenting with single-ingredient lotion alternatives, and one product in particular offered many positive and unexpected uses. My magical, secret makeup remover is jojoba ("hoh-hoh-buh") oil.

What Is Jojoba Oil?

Extracted from the seed of the jojoba plant, this pale, honey-colored oil fits into my green journey perfectly. While using the oil to hydrate my delicate facial skin before bedtime, I noticed it also removed lingering eye shadow. Then I used it to wipe away my lipstick. Finally, I gave the new makeup remover the ultimate test: dry mascara. With a few swipes, my eyelashes were clean, too. Fantastic!

Using Jojoba Oil to Remove Makeup

So, how do I use the oil? Carefully. Like other oils, it can be messy and cause stains. I like to apply the oil just before or after a shower so it doesn't drip onto my clothes.

When using jojoba oil, remember that less is more. You don't need much to wipe away a face full of makeup. Start by adding three to four drops of jojoba oil to a cotton ball. Then use the moistened ball to wipe over your makeup. Apply a little bit of pressure to remove your eye shadow, foundation, blush, and concealer. You may need to press a bit harder to remove lip stains, lipstick, mascara, or eyeliner.

Finally, let the oil soak into your skin for a natural, hydrating moisturizer! There's no need to wash the oil from your face. Jojoba oil is a safe, natural alternative to lotion or facial moisturizers. I've been using the oil for a few years now, and my skin looks more youthful than ever.

Other Uses for Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil has become my go-to product for more than just removing makeup. I also use it to:

  • Moisturize my face
  • Soothe dry skin
  • Smooth flyaway hair
  • Hydrate skin after shaving
  • Moisturize dry fingernails and toenails
