Tom's of Maine is Now a Certified B Corporation

by Julie Sprague, Stewardship Manager in Thinking Sustainably

When Tom and Kate Chappell first started Tom's of Maine, they knew they wanted to operate in a way that was good for people and the environment. Those same values drive us to this day, and we are so excited to announce that Tom's of Maine is now a Certified B Corporation.

What is a Certified B Corporation?

Certified B corporations (B Corps) are leaders of a global movement of people using business as a force for good. They meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability. By becoming a Certified B Corp, we are joining 2,788 other B Corps in 150 industries and 64 countries around the world.

How Do Businesses become Certified B Corporations?

The B Corp assessment process measures a company's performance in five categories: governance, workers, customers, community, and the environment. So becoming a B Corp requires a commitment of time, and a commitment to transparency! And now when we talk about being a company that cares about its social and environmental performance, you won't have to just take our word for it. You'll know that this is backed by a process that uses credible, comprehensive, transparent, and independent standards.

Why is B Corps Certification Important for You?

When you go to buy a good or service, do you ever feel like you are voting with your dollar? B Corporation Certification helps consumers identify companies with a mission. And it is one of the few certifications that is not just for a specific product or service, but for the whole business behind the product or service. When a company has the B Corp certification it's a sign that they share your values and care about a healthier environment, stronger communities, reduced inequality, and the creation of high-quality jobs with dignity and purpose.

Why Tom's of Maine is a Certified B Corporation

Our early approach to environmental and social responsibility was really driven by the values of our founders, and it led to some amazing things! Each year Tom's of Maine gives 10% of profits to nonprofit organizations, and employees are encouraged to use 5% of their paid time to volunteer for their favorite causes. We also strive to reduce our environmental impact, with targets for reducing the amount of waste we generate, and the water and energy we use, for example.

With your help, we've done a lot of amazing things over the past 49 years. Achieving B Corp certification represents our public commitment to upholding a purpose-driven business and supporting a global economy that benefits all. B Corp Certification also shows that the values and practices that have been core to Tom's of Maine for nearly 50 years aren't just our achievements of the past. They are our vision for the future. We are proud to be a part of this global community, and looking forward to the next 50 years of operating as a force for good!
